Expedia turns to big data
As Expedia has delved further into mobile, the company is also gathering a plethora of data. The key is to sort out how to best use that data. Expedia has recently launched three new features on its website and mobile apps to assist consumers in their travel planning process.
Flight Recommendations
Using the insights garnered from more than three billion flight searches, Flight Recommendations suggests alternative airports, dates or times of travel that are more convenient or cost-effective for travelers based on the decisions of thousands of travelers. Flight Recommendations was designed to streamline the flight search process helping travelers identify the right flight for them more efficiently.
Scratchpad
According to Expedia's data, the average person searches 48 times on a wide array of travel sites before finally booking their flight. Users who are logged in to their Expedia account now have access to a new online feature titled Scratchpad, which stores and organizes searches that users can refer back to. Scratchpad works across platforms enabling users to have access to their history no matter what device they are using. In addition, the feature sends customized emails to the user when prices change.
Itinerary Sharing
This feature allows users to share their travel itineraries with friends and family to ensure that whoever may be picking them up or dropping them off receives the same status updates as the traveler. The sharing can be done through email, AirDrop, text message or Facebook.
